Get maximum out of study holidays
How to get the maximum out of class 12 study holidays?
Study holidays is a stressful time. Students jumble up and keep a lot of material to study depth, they put in long hours upto 14 hours or even 16 hours in a day, depending on the exam you prepare for. Especially class 12 is most stressful because the score will determine your ranking, your admission in engineering college etc. So, class 12 is the classic exam how stressful it can be.
When students enter study holidays, already schools must have completed their syllabus and some of the school must’ve also completed revision. In spite that study on the day is the critical period because whatever you score in class 12 determines your entire future especially if you want to do medicine or engineering – high quality IIT.
- First part of the article I have explained why study holidays of class 12 is more important?
- Second is how do we get maximum value out of it?
Now we have two choices:
Spend entire holidays on revision or Focus on new material. Suppose you have 12 chapters and you have completed 10 chapters and 2 chapters you have not studied at all. One very common question I get asked is should I start studying the 2 chapters or I should focus on revised 10 chapters which I have already studied?
Both have pros and cons, if you need to study the 2 chapters which you have not studied before, you need somebody to guide you, if you are own you cannot pick a new chapter. It is very difficult because the stress level is building up on your mind, the stressed mind cannot accept new information.
Therefore, you need a powerful coach or a guide to teach you 2 chapters. If I had to make a choice, I better prefer revising the 10 chapters that I have already studies.
The second aspect is about how do I study and what time schedule should I follow? Obviously, people have different clock timing some people study early in the morning some people study late in the night some people study in the afternoon so, the rhythm of the study is very important. During the study holidays, everyday you must follow the same schedule you can’t keep changing.
Depending on your personality, you may be a late-night person, every day start around 10 o clock and study until 1 o’clock or 2 o’clock. If you are morning person get up early in the morning around 4 or 5 o’clock but go to sleep by 10 p.m. But you cannot do both, studying in night till 2 o’clock and again start at 5 o’clock in the morning.
So, the third rule of studying in holidays i.e. preparation time is not to study more than 12 hours or 14 hours. This means you must get 8 hours of sleep. This is very important. If you reduce your sleep hours and study more than this you cannot retain anything and may blank out during the exam.
Next is how much of physical activity is required to study well? I always believe, if you keep on studying all the time your mind gets cluttered. Physical activity is one way taking things off your head. There are many ways of indulging in physical activity – one is play games like football, hockey, basketball and join a team. If there is no such group available go for jogging, run for 7 to 8 kms. You will get tired and your mind will be completely free of stress. Physical activity is essential, and you have to have 8 hours of sleep. You can budget 2 hours for physical activity and remaining 14 hours available to study.
How much of time should I spend on watching television or browsing the web?
You must completely cut off television & internet. They are very dangerous which easily kills the time and they are big distractions. Rather spending those 2 hours on watching television or internet go for physical activity a jog – 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening and come back, fresh up and sit down quietly for 15 minutes and meditate. This prepares your mind better to study and retain what you have studied.
My last recommendation is to study always in a small group, but all the group members should be of same seriousness, of the same intent. If one person is lazy and not serious he will waste everybody’s time. Therefore, always study in the groups with the same interest so that you can share your load. Everybody will teach each other and that’s a very powerful way of studying.
These are the techniques to get the maximum out of class 12 study holidays.
